The Hungarian capital need not feel inferior to London and that is not even comparing them in terms of beauty, history, or cultural heritage, but simply football. Indeed, for the 2026–2027 season, no fewer than five Budapest clubs are competing in the Hungarian first division, known as the OTP Bank Liga.

All are historic clubs dating back to the golden age of Hungarian football in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s: Ferencváros, Vasas Budapest, Újpest, Honvéd Budapest, and MTK Budapest.

Just imagine: every weekend, from Friday to Monday, you can attend a match, or even two in a single day, without having to travel elsewhere, allowing you to stay in this fantastic city.

Ferencváros: Hungary’s most titled club, which often performs impressively in European competitions. The only downside is the mandatory membership card, requiring fingerprinting at the club shop and a Hungarian ID, which is the only way to get tickets (unless you use Sportevents365).

Újpest: A historic club that has never been relegated but has been treading water for over twenty years. Nevertheless, the fans' passion is admirable, and the stadium while old-school is very pleasant.

Honvéd Budapest: Another historic club with over ten titles to its name. There is a family atmosphere at the Bozsik Aréna, named after a former legend of the club and Hungarian football.

MTK Budapest: With 23 titles, it is the second most successful club. The atmosphere at its ultra-modern stadium is said to be more subdued than at the capital's other clubs.

Then there is Vasas Budapest, another historic club with plenty of titles to its name—though it hasn't won a trophy in over 40 years. No matter, though; the club has a large fanbase and a fantastic atmosphere at its stadium.

Less than 40 kilometers from Budapest, in Felcsút, lies another renowned club: Puskás Akadémia.

Handball is also hugely popular in Hungary, though the two most prominent clubs—Veszprém and Szeged—are located quite far from the capital. However, both clubs compete in the EHF Champions League, with matches taking place midweek.
